Safe Storage and Handling of Lab Chemicals
  1. Familiarize yourself with chemical label and Material Data Safety Sheet. Become familiar with the hazards, safety precautions and the safety equipment.
  2. Wear goggles and apron when using or disposing of chemicals.
  3. Know where eye wash is in case of chemical spill in eyes, know where other safety materials are.
  4. Maintain chemical inventory and know where chemicals are stored. Always have proper labels on all chemicals.
  5. Store chemicals in a locked storage area. Keep flammable liquids and combustible materials capped and kept away from open flames.
  6. Store flammable liquids in approved flammable storage cabinet.
  7. Concentrated acids should be stored in an approved wooden acid storage cabinet.
  8. Read disposable recommendations before doing the laboratory.

Acid and Base Control
  1. Always add acid to water when diluting or mixing the acids.
  2. When diluting concentrated sulfuric acid, place the beaker in an ice bath.
  3. Always thoroughly clean counter tops when using acids and bases.
  4. Dispense concentrated acids in a fume hood.
  5. Save acids and bases in the same containers, to nuetralize each of the solutions, If they are a PH of 7 then they can go down the drain.

Acid and Base Spills
  1. Neutralize acid spills by sprinkling baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) on the area, spread diatomaceous earth to absorb the neutralized spill, sweep up and dispose.
  2. Neutralize base spills by pouring vinegar on the area, spread diatomaceous earth to absorb the neutralized spill, sweep up and dispose.
  3. Acid spill on skin, flush area with cold water. If skin appears acid-burned spread a paste made of baking soda and water on the area, and obtain medical attention.
  4. Base spill on skin, flush area with cold water. If skin appears base-burned spread vinegar on the area, and obtain medical attention.
  5. If acid/base spill is on clothing drench with water and cut/remove clothing to remove chemical contact with clothing.
  6. Do not cover acid/base treated burns with bandages!

Mercury Spills
  1. Use aspirator bulb or mercury vacuum device to pick-up mercury.
  2. Cover droplets with sulfur to reduce volatility.

Chemical in the Eye
  1. Hold eyelids apart as far as possible.
  2. Flush with moving warm water for 15 minutes.
  3. Call 911, and alert school nurse and administrator.
